The Plastic Bank & Social Plastic
Since 2017 Henkel is working together with the Plastic Bank social enterprise to help to reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in the oceans.
Plastic Bank was founded in 2013 with the mission to fight ocean plastic and poverty, two worldwide issues and challenges. The Plastic Bank builds ethical recycling ecosystems in coastal communities, and reprocesses collected plastic waste for future use. Their concept: locals can collect plastic waste from the beach or land and exchange it for money or (social) benefits.
How Does it Work?
The Plastic Bank's primary goal is to reduce ocean plastic by stopping plastic waste before it reaches waterways and oceans while improving people's lives in poverty. To accomplish this ambitious goal, Plastic Bank has developed ethical recycling ecosystems for collected plastic waste.
- Plastic Bank builds collection centers in countries with high levels of poverty and underdeveloped waste system.
- In areas with Plastic Bank centers, the local population can collect plastic from the beach or land and bring it to the centers.
- According to the weight of plastic waste collected and depending on the type of material, the collectors receive compensation, such as school hours for children, medical support, technical support, or money.
- The Plastic Bank then processes the collected plastic into recycled plastic, which we call Social Plastic®. This Social Plastic® can be used to create new goods, like our Fa 250ml transparent bottles!
Henkel supports the ongoing projects in Haiti, the Philippines, Indonesia and will make significant contributions to the development of new branches in Egypt.
